In The Beginning
Bob Chorney, an OMAF employee and later the General Manager of Farmers'
Market Ontario, was instrumental in the
return of Farmers' Markets to the small towns of Ontario. A trial market was held in Perth in the summer
of 1991 and was very successful. Rob Trower, manager of Shaws of Perth,
became the BIA rep for the market. He took on the role of being the driving
force behind the market during its formative period. We have been operating
as Perth Farmers' Market since June 13, 1992.
Our Home
From 1994 to 2005 the Perth Farmers' Market was located at the Tay Basin
in the Crystal Palace in downtown Perth, Ontario, Canada. In 2006, the Market temporarily moved to the County
Administration Building located at 99 Christie Lake
Road (Sunset Blvd.). In 2007 the Market re-located on a trial basis to Market Square in Perth.
In 2008, the Perth Farmers's Market returned to the Crystal Palace in downtown Perth.
Our market is open, rain or shine,
every Saturday morning from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM starting on the weekend of
Mother's Day until the Thanksgiving Weekend.
Other Beginnings
The Perth Garlic Festival got its start at the Perth Farmers' Market on
August 16, 1997. It moved to larger facilities the next year but is still a
yearly event held at the Perth Fair Grounds in mid August.
Our Success
Thanks to the founding people and many dedicated people since, our
market is one of the most successful in Ontario. In one year alone sales
increased by an unbelievable 30%. Because of this success we have a large
number of vendors that offer high quality, and a good variety of produce,
crafts and services.
These are just some of the products you can find on any given market
day:
- locally
organically grown produce,
- home baked pies,
pastries and bread,
- pickles, jams and
preserves of all kinds,
- confections
- flowers, herbs and
plants,
- garlic, honey and
maple syrup,
- meat and eggs
- weaving, juried
crafts and jewellery
- BBQ pork
- Market Cafe

Every Saturday one lucky patron wins the contents of the market basket
which is filled with samples contributed by the vendors that day.
